My son loves the beach but his red hair and incredibly fair skin means he fries even if we put sunscreen on him. Most beaches on the Eastern side of Oahu are pretty much sizling by 8:30 am. In the winter it is a bit better. But how do we keep him happy? At Sans Souci Beach (aka Kaimana and Dig Me) there is a tall condo that throws a massive shadow well out into the water, creating the perfect sun-free beach.
The sand is clean and cool, although there does tend to be a lot of coral rocks so if junior is a digger exercise some caution on that front. A stand of lovely coconut palms frame the space and the relatively water is shallow and calm. Snorkeling is poor, but my son is learning to paddle his surfboard there. The New Otani Kaimani Beach Hotel has a little snack bar and an overpriced, open-air restaurant where hau trees create a canopy over the tables. The restaurant serves a serviceable breakfast (You're definitely paying for the view and the ambiance). Sans Souci won't make any "Best Beach" award lists but for kids that can't handle sun its a fabulous respite.
