Best Beaches: Kuki'o

This is one of my favorite beaches in the islands. It's not a big beach but its truly stunning. Actually, Kuki'o is more like a peninsula with two pocket beaches and fabulous lawn overlooking crystal clear water. There is a shallow, sand-bottomed tidepool lagoon perfect for kids. The neighboring high-end gated community maintains a grassy lawn that covers much of the peninsula. Coconut palms provide lovely shade and the classic Hawaii soundtrack of fronds rustling in the breeze. On the northernmost side of the peninsula there is a rocky beach entry into calm water where I spotted several sea turtles, healthy coral, and a nice variety of tropical fish.
You can't see this beach from the highway. There is a public-access parking lot and excellent facilities (bathrooms, fresh-water showers). Best to arrive early to get a stall in the lot, as they are limited. Also, Kuki'o does not have enough shade for the late morning and afternoon so lollygaggers will get fried Most of the beaches along the Kona Coast of the Big Island are not visible from the Mamalehoa Highway and are hidden behind wide expanses of black volcanic rock. Drive north on state Highway 19 from Kona. Turn left at Mile Marker #87. At the intersection go to the left and pass through a guard gate. Follow the signs to Public Access pathway to the beach area.

Yeah, this looks like a nice beach, but have you seen Lumahai Beach, just west of Hanalei Bay on Kauai. That is to die for … Hope you’ve checked it out; or will soon.

Hi, Elspeth. Yes, been there. Great beach. Bad place to swim. Locals call it Luma-die. Its lovely and isolated. I’m partial to places where you can get wet. It’s also a bit more overdone than this beach, which is far less noticed. Thanks for reading — I do appreciate it!
