This year's edition is finally online. I disagree with a lot of it. In a city of great ethnic and Asian restaurants, its laughable to say that middling Italian spot Auntie Pasto's is the best place to eat on Beretania Street and Sushi King may be the most popular but its certainly not even close to the best late night sushi joint (umm, if you're in the neighborhood, try Imanas Tei instead). Still, there's a lot of good information in this reader-driven poll issue and I tend to circular file mine and forget about it after a week or so. I'm posting so people planning trips can find it and also for folks in Honolulu who may have missed the issue on the stands (it's actually fairly hard to find on the HW website -- you really have to scroll quite a bit). Thanks to editor Chris Haire for entertaining us, as always. Here are a few of our fave picks.

* Best Outdoor Activities - Kayaking to the Mokes: "...A memorable day outing: Pack up or pick up a picnic lunch. Rent a kayak from the trailers at Kailua Beach or from Kailua Sailboards and Kayaks across the street in the Kailua Beach Center. Enjoy an easy paddle across Kailua’s calm waters out to the Mokulua Islands, where you can land and have lunch on the beach. Frolic and check out the birds."

* Best Art Event - ArtafterDark: "...The Honolulu Academy of Arts’ monthly shindig for young, hip professionals is...a themed party with live entertainment, gallery strolling, food and drink and mingling in the cool, starry evening."

* Best Farmers Market - Kapiolani Community College: "...worth waking up for. Want mix-your-own ginger ale made from home-grown ginger? Check. North Shore beef? Check. Hau‘ula tomatoes? Check...".

i agree that often the “best of honolulu” list is nothing but a regurgitation of the previous year’s list wherein the highest bidder gets the award. the best midnight snack is at zippy’s? well maybe because they’re the only place open at midnight, and everyone has noticed how they’ve taken advantage of that market by jacking up their prices although everything but the dessert menu tastes fresh out of the microwave. try liliha bakery on liliha and kuakini instead. at midnight, you won’t have to wait for one of the 15 diner stools to open and will still have a full menu to choose from as well as a taste of the ol’ honolulu diner style, reasonably priced, cooked to order right in front of you, and oh so yummy. grab a box of famous coco puffs while you’re there!
