Places We Love: Makena

Why we love it: No hotels in sight, long enough for a really long stroll or to find some solitude, gorgeous views of Kaho'olawe and Lanai across the channel, generally good for swimming. The only downsides are the surf can be too rough for weak swimmers and children on some days and car thefts are all too common. Crowds are minimal compared to the beaches in Wailea and Kihei up the road. This is one of the world's best beaches, as you can see from the picture. Best times to come are early morning or late afternoon as the South Maui sun can be intense. (Note: Little Beach, right next door to Makena Beach, is an equally beautiful beach that's unofficially "clothing optional"). Pair Makena with a snorkel trip to Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Preserve and a snack at the Makena Grill and you've had an amazing day.
