Wave of the Week: Laniakea

Where: Oahu, Statewide || Grouped in: Oahu Sports, Statewide Sports || Tagged:

This is a long, long right that takes a straight North swell quite well. It doesn't line up as well for a West swell. Also called Lani's, it can get totally huge (double-triple overhead) and remain rideable under the right conditions. The paddle out is fairly easy -- there's a wide channel on the left side of the break. At smaller sizes -- 10 foot faces and below -- Lani's is a fairly mellow, fun wave with take-offs that are not too critical. The crowd can be heavy and at times rabid. Lots of people take their Waimea Guns out for test drives at Lani's when the surf is too small for the real stuff. Also, there are always longboarders sitting on the outside. If you get washed inside, paddle for the channel rather than trying to fight through the whitewater. The reef inside is nasty. There is no left at Lani's to speak of and certainly none in sizeable surf.
