Alan Wong's Opihi Shooter Off the Menu

A sad development. Due to the state ban on commercial sales of opihi, Alan Wong's Restaurant on King Street has converted its famed opihi shooter into an oyster shooter. We ate there last night. I had an oyster shooter. It was good, but....Apparently, Wong did not like the limpet (opihi) replacement shipped in from New Zealand and opted for oysters from the mainland. The flavors are similiar, of course, but its never as local minus the opihi. This was one of Wong's classic appetizers, a bracing and brisk blast of chewy opihi, olives, tomato water, and spices that cleansed the palate and really set the stage for a meal. I'm very sorry to see it go.
