This is the first in a series of five excerpts from a book I like very much by Jessica Ferracane and Yvonne Biegel, "50 Thrifty Maui Restaurants". Foodies trolling for blue collar grubs should dig in. And a hat tip to the folks at Watermark Publishing who agreed to the excerpts. If you buy the book through these links, I will get a small cut so help me help them help you ;). (I don't plug anything on this site that I don't like so take it as you will). Jessica and Yvonne hits every worthwhile hole-in-the-wall on Maui and comes up with some very interesting places. Here's the first of five.
Sunrise Cafe in Lahaina is a charming place to start the day, and its tiny street-side deck, built around a big kukui nut tree, makes a shady perch for peoplewatching. The colossal cinnamon rolls ($2.75) are big enough for two to share. Pancake lovers will go ga-ga for the Chocolate Buttermilk Pancakes (or waffles, $7.95), topped with shredded dark and white chocolate, strawberries, whipped cream and, if so desired, chocolate mint syrup. Like a jolt with your morning sugar? The coffee is sublime and served piping hot. Stay for breakfast and try one of the croissant sandwiches ($3.95) or the Sunrise Platter ($6.95). It's two scrambled eggs, choice of Portuguese sausage or bacon, fresh fruit and island-made nine-grain toast. If breakfast isn't your bag, the lunch menu is available in the morning as well. The juicy Mango BBQ Beef Sandwich is served on a sub roll with homemade barbecue sauce and a choice of starch and veggies for $7.95. There's also a good selection of salads ($4.50 to $7.95), a Santa Fe Burrito ($9.95), homemade soup ($3.95) and many other worthwhile choices. Sunrise Cafe is snuggled between Lahaina Harbor and Front Street, alongside a steady stream of surfers, cruise ship and charter boat passengers, delivery drivers and Front Street shopkeepers.
