Honeymoon Helper: Kapalua or Kaanapali on Maui?

Our second installment of this (soon to be) never-ending Q&A on Hawaii honeymoons. As we've said before, help us help you save your honeymoon. We have a question from Grace, who resides in coastal Maine with her husband who is a serious waterman (kayaking, fishing, etc).
Grace:"We definitely want to go to Maui and we've read that there's just more to do in West Maui than on the other side of the islands. But we can't decide whether to stay at a hotel in Kapalua or in Kaanapali. My husband is a water sports nut but doesn't like mob scenes. Where would he (and we) be happiest?"
Hawaiirama: For my honeymoon two-cents, I'd reccomend you bunk in Kapalua. Here's why. Kaanapali is fabulous. The beach is very long and great for walking. There are plenty of things to do, including tons of water sports. However, its a bit more crowded than Kapalua and less quiet. There's only one true hotel that way these days, the Ritz Carlton, and its a lovely spot. There are two beaches walking distance from the resort (D.T. Fleming and Kapalua) that are both world-class and not terribly crowded. Just up the road you can find Honolua Bay which has, on good days, excellent diving, serious surfing, and great snorkeling. There's no beach there but its rarely crowded by mainland standards. If you do decide to stay in Kaanapali, as there's more to do in terms of nightlife and eating, then stay at the Sheraton Maui. Because its tucked right up against a big lava bluff, it doesn't feel quite as crowded as the rest of Kaanapali. Mahalo for your question."
