Modern Minimalist Vacation Chic: Hale Balleja

HaleBalleja.jpg This vacation rental is not your average floral-patterned, rattan furnished beach pad. Hale Balleja is located in the Puna District, which is about as far off the tourist track as you can get. It's a great place with nearby surfing, amazing tidepools for snorkeling, and no hotels or major condos anywhere nearby. It's a little rough and rugged but this house, which was designed by noted architect Craig Steely and has an eye-popping view of the black sand beach at Kehena Bay, should take the edge off.

True modern design is hard to come by in Hawai’i, especially when everything has a hula girl and/or coconut tree emblem on it. I’m a local modernist who believes that we should not let our buildings and dwellings overwhelm and outshine the natural beauty that Hawai’i already has.
