Big Island artist Stephen Freedman stacked clay totems and constructed large pottery vessels literally shaped with lyric designs and text. The effect is quite striking, like looking through clay vessels and reading a sheet of music simultaneously. Freedman's works are on exhibit at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center in the Schaeffer International Gallery, which is open from 11-5 Tuesday through Sunday. It's located in Kahului Maui. A good plan would be to check out the exhibit then go eat at Restaurant Matsu, also in Kahului, a hole-in-the-wall Japanese gem favored by local chefs.
