The Hanalei area of Kauai has four world-class beaches in Ke'e, Tunnels, Haena, and Hanalei Bay. Surfers, snorkelers, beach combers and every other type of beach lover can find their ultimate calling in Hanalei. The area also has the ultimate laid-back lifestyle, with no high-rises and only a couple of small hotels. I camped up there a while back but wouldn't want to do that with my family. We much prefer small cottages for the space and privacy, not to mention the cost. Hale Makai is one of the nicer spots up there. I haven't stayed in the property but have walked through it and checked out the accomodations. It's not posh but the cottages are comfortable and all are walking distance to Tunnels, Haena, and Ke'e Beach. They don't all have ocean views but the property abuts the ocean so its not to hard to catch a glimpse of blue. There are five cottages in total on the 1.5 acre grounds. Cottage 2 has the best views. Make sure to ask specifically what the views are like from the cottage you are booking as the Website is not entirely clear and tends to gush a little bit. Still, this is a very good property and a wonderful place for families seeking sedate Kauai.
