designmark_chailampipuv02.jpgI had long wondered who had made the very cool hanging lamps at Ed Kenney's restaurant Town in Honolulu. Now I know, thanks to Hapa Hale Mark Chai is a Hawaii-Chinese artist who makes cutting edge hanging lamps of intricate interlocking pieces of cut and finished plywood. The effect is origami in thin air with distinctive Hawaii touches. Here pictures is his "Ipu" lamp, which takes its shape from the traditional Hawaiian ipu or gourd. Chai sells his wares in Hawaii at the follow locations.: INTO on Hotel Street, The Contemporary Museum shop, and Na Mea Hawai’i, among others.

Alex, thank you so much for putting me on your blog. I never thought of my pieces as origami in thin air but that is a great comparison. I’m working on some new stuff now, if you check my web site you’ll see an installation I just created for American Savings Bank, and I’m working on some new designs for the Maoli Arts Month. Aloha!
