Hawaii Spa Reviews: Waikiki Planatation Spa -- Big, Nice, Loud?

Note from editor: I am going to be publishing a series of spa reviews here on Hawaiirama. These are based on first-hand experiences and are not complimentary or reduced rate treatments. I personally know nothing about spas. So I'm sending Hawaiirama's spa spy to do the reviews for me. She is far more discerning. Enjoy.
Waikiki Planatation Spa
Pros: This roomy complex is located at the penthouse level atop the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel. The space is roomy and the room decor is very nice -- contemporary but classic. The relaxation deck in particular is cool, with teak planking and inlaid stones. The treatments are competent and well executed,. The Spa Spy said the lomilomi massage she received was very soothing. The facility is clean with lots of sunlight and ocean views, as compared to a number of Waikiki and Oahu spas that are shoehorned into odd spaces in old facilities. The prices are actually quite reasonable compared to other spa facilities in the islands. The body polishes and scrubs are pretty cool -- mac nut scrub, anyone? The spa will validate for parking and does offer a modest ka'amaina (local) discount.
Cons: Reception greeting was not terribly pleasant. The music was way too loud for my spa spy's tastes. The spa did chose to levy an 18% service fee -- in other words, a mandatory tip -- on top of the charge for services. The lomilomi massage felt good but the Spa Spy said it clearly was not real lomilomi and was more like a hybrid. The view from the relaxation deck does include a nice ocean vista but also a closeup of rooftop airconditioning units for the hotel. The offerings are interesting but not as innovative as some of those found at other spas. Most are fairly standard. The pedicure area is close to the entrance so any effects of aromatherapy get blasted away by the acetate and other nail salon odors.
The Bottom Line: A very nice spa with beautiful decor, competent service, and reasonable prices for Hawaii. Don't expect perfection but do expect a relaxing, unhurried spa treat. (Note: We would have posted candid pics but the spa told us we couldn't shoot any. They don't have any on their site so you'll have to take our word that the decor is groovy.)
