Here's a fascinating article about the history of the anchialine pond's on the Big Island's Kona-Kohala Coast and one man's quest to revive them. These landlocked brackish ponds are linked to the ocean through volcanic tubes. Such natural ponds were centers of life in old Hawaii and vibrant fisheries. Development savaged the ponds at Ka'ahulepu on the Big Island, where the Four Seasons Hualalai Resort now stands. The resort hired David Chai to care for the natural resources of the property and the area, including the ponds. The results have been spectacular, with Chai cleaning up the ponds and successfully reintroducing all manner of native endemic flora and fauna. Read about Chai in this article from Hana Hou Magazine, the top-quality inflight for Hawaiian Airlines.
