John Serrao: Hawaiian Quilt Master
Where: Statewide || Grouped in: Statewide Culture || Tagged:
Hawaiian Quilting as an art form traces its roots back to Missionary Days and the New England mores the Christian arrivistes to Hawaii brought from their Northeast homes. It has survived and thrived in the islands and become something uniquely Hawaiian. Hand-sewn patterns depict local flora in bright, vibrant colors. Families pass these quilts down from generation to generation. Here's an excellent article profiling one of the current masters of this art, John Serrao.
