More Earthquake Aftermath: Little Makena Closed

The state Deparment of Land and Natural Resources has closed Little Beach in the Makena district of Maui, Maui News reports., after a landslide hit the beach area. Cinder cones that form the hill between Little and Big Beaches are pretty unstable and DLNR fears further slides. This was a popular nude beach (one of two on the island) and snorkeling and bodyboarding spot. Also, Big Island visitors hoping to kayak through the Kohala Mountains with the company Flumin' Da Ditch are out of luck -- probably permanently. Earthquake damage to the agricultural ditches in the Kohala Mountains where the tours were run forced the company to close. Damage on the particular ditch owned by the company is estimated to be $1 million. Another sad tidbit: DLNR again has closed parts of Kealakekua Bay after landslides. I think you can still kayak the bay but you can't hike to the Captain Cooke Memorial -- unclear on whether you can put in your kayak at the boat landing, either.
