If you are a member of the Moral Majority, you may want to put a blindfold on junior before you take him to Bubbie's. This homegrown ice cream company makes obscenely great ice cream, rich and dreamy, and tags its ice cream creations with truly unspeakable names -- no f-words or s-words but its pretty clear what they mean. At any rate, the best part about Bubbies is the mochi balls. These are little nuggets of super premium ice cream wrapped in mochi, the Japanese gummy candy stuff made from pounded rice. We go through a small tub of these balls in the car on the way home -- they rarely make it to freezer. Mango mochi is our favorite but the Kona coffee is quite nice, as well. This, of course, is nothing new for locals who have long known about Bubbies. But, hey, everyone in Hawaii should eat like a local, right? You can also pick up a handy, dandy pack of these beauties at most major supermarkets around the islands and can even mail order them (not quite sure how it works but hey, worth a try). * Note: Bubbies made the "O List" in June 2006 so hopefully crowds have died down by now.
