Shark Chumming for Divers: Just Say No

Dumping bloody bits of fish into the water to entice sharks close to steel cages containing humanoid divers is something practiced all over the tropical world -- in Tahiti, the Caribbean and other warm water locales. Two dive companies do this off the North Shore of Oahu. Some locals have started to wonder whether this could teach sharks to associate boats with food and follow them close to the harbor. I’m not sure I see the logic but messing with Mother Nature this way seems foolish as the Law of Unforeseen Consequences always rears its ugly head. Shark sightings on the North Shore are, for whatever reason, way up over the past three years.
