Don Ho: Waikiki's Original Donald

If anyone of you out there reading hasn't hummed along to "Tiny Bubbles" at some point in you life, then, well, your probably lying! This anthem to cheap champagne entered the musical anthology of America courtesy of Don Ho, the Hawaii singer and performer who was the islands' answer to Sinatra and the Rat Pack (in fact, he partied with that crew when they cruised Waikiki back in the swinging 60s and 70s). With a plunging v-neckline like Elvis and a shaggy dog hairdo that sent the wahine wild, Don remains in heavy rotation to this day on turntable at tiki-tacky parties. For those who don't know, Don Ho still actually performs regular shows in Waikiki and it's a hoot.
He's not much of a singer -- sometimes he seems to lose focus midsong and his eyes wander off into the crowd. He also forgets to sing into the mic. Don also professes at each show how much he hates to sing Tiny Bubbles. But he still opens and closes each raucous concert with that number and, in between, manages to whip a crowd into happy singalongs with cheeky odes to the joys of island women and other lovely ditties. On a more serious note, Don Ho is ailing and may not be performing all that much longer so you may have limited time to catch this true entertainment icon in action.
