Hawaii Restaurants: Don't Ask A Local

Where: Statewide || Grouped in: Statewide Food || Tagged:

Sifting through the most recent Honolulu Advertiser Ilima Awards for best restaurants around Hawaii, I was struck by the bizarre choices made by readers for top honors. True, Hawaii is actually a fairly blue-collar state with one of the highest rates of union membership in the country and I am a no-holds barred, total elitist foodie snob. But...what are these people thinking?

Some samples of the madness:

Best Coffee Shop -- Starbuck's
Best Casual Restaurant -- California Pizza Kitchen
Best New Restaurant -- Romano's Macaroni Grill (part of a chain of cookie-cutter Italian-American eateries)

The moral here? Do not ask a local where to eat. Ask a registered, card carrying foodie who, ideally, happens to live here. If you ask a local where to eat, you might as well eat at home and just pack a bag lunch for your Hawaii vacation.
