kai.jpgSam Kaha‘i Ka‘ai is a master woodcarver and Hawaiian cultural treasure. He was born in Hana in 1938 and during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the 1970s and 1980s he played key roles, carving ki'i (spirit totems) for traditional Hawaiian sailing vessels such as the Hokulea and keeping alive the ancient art of Hawaiian woodworking by creating an exquisite collection of hand-wrought weaponry, fish hooks, and ceremonial wooden bowls. His lifework is on display in an exhibit at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. It's both a moving tribute and fascinating introduction for visitors to Hawaiian culture, raw and untouched The exhibit runs through Dec. 30 so don't delay.
