"Maui Fever" Pile On: Get A Grip, People

Where: Maui || Grouped in: Maui Any Kine || Tagged:

Not that this has ANYTHING to do with things to do in Hawaii but...There's been a huge uproar in the islands over a new MTV "reality" show based in Ka'anapali on Maui. The cast of the show is all white. Hawaii is not very white. Ergo, the brouhaha. Eh. Get a grip, folks. All reality shows are pretty unreal. If you wuz looking fo' some ethinc kine representation, Hollywood is not da place, cuz. And MTV is about entertainment, not reality. If the show fails or succeeds that his little to do with reality in Hawaii.

As most sensible minds would agree - reality shows are most often false and superficial representations of peoples and places. However, when it comes to the exploitation of our island home and culture - I will not support nor stand for it. People who have no prior exposure or experience with island life, culture, and peoples of Hawaii will view this “MAUI FEVER” and form negative stereotypes and pre-judgements. I am disappointed that the State Film Commissioner did not thoroughly research the project before allowing it to proceed. It is shows like “MAUI FEVER” and “REAL WORLD HAWAII” and similarly movies such as “BLUE CRUSH” and “50 FIRST DATES” that continue to portray our island culture and peoples in lights of unintelligence and ignorance.

God forbid there is an all white cast on any TV show. If they were all Hawiian white people wouldn’t be complaining. I guess the people complaining have a lot of time on thier hands…

“…before allowing it to proceed?”

Mere, the State Film Commissioner is not a censor.

Producers are free to produce whatever they please without government interference. Even the production tax credit (which is being claimed, according to a recent Advertiser article) does not provide the Film Commission any discretion to censor.

many of us here in chicago were confused as to why everyone on the show is white. i think, more than anything, that i’m impressed how throughly they managed to whitewash so many of the shots—it was hard to find anyone of non-european descent in the first episode.

the bigger issue about MTV’s current crop of shows is: why are all of the cast members suddenly useless, ambitionless drunks? i remember seasons of real world with actual, interesting casts—particularly san francisco and new orleans. several from those seasons have gone on to interesting things.
