Hawaii Beach Guides: Chun's Reef

On a recent day out surfing at Chun's on Oahu's North Shore, I looked back at the beach and thought -- holy cow! That's actually a great little beach. You can't really see much of the beach from the road as there's only a tiny opening between the crush of houses lining the Kam Highway from Haleiwa to Sunset Beach. But to the right of that opening (if you are looking out towards the water) the beach opens up nicely and turns into a wonderful, not-too-crowded, fairly protected strand of sand. The surfing at Chun's is nice for beginners to moderates and favors longboarders and grommets -- which is actually a very good thing on the hectic North Shore. Pros never show up here so the hassle factor is much lower. The wave is still crowded but people are far less aggro about it out there. A lot of people have written off the North Shore as too crowded, to surfy and to dang noisy. This little stretch of paradise at Chun's might change your mind.

I would like to know if Chuns Reef is named after the Chun family that run the Chun Store in Waialua.

Chuns reef was named after our grandfather John Chun the original owner and proprietor of Chun’s Store and Market
Haleiwa, Hi. It was named after him and his children who had a home there. His sons were avid waterman, surfing and fishing there. He welcomed everyone to his home and was known for his kindness and generosity. Many surfing legends recall staying at the old beach house and have fond memories of the Chun ‘ohana.
