A few posts back I asked readers of Hawaiirama to tell me where they liked to go hiking with their keiki. This was one of my first stabs at interactivity, supposedly a strength of blogs. Lo, I got one response from J. Sea. It was a good response so, thusly, am posting.
"Hiking with my (now 5-year-old) daughter was always one of our favorite things to do together. Some of my favorite times were spent doing the easy, paved walk to Waimea Falls. She loved taking a dip in the falls' pool at the end, and of course, all the great nature stuff along the way. Another one of our favorite hikes was on the other side of the island - the hike to Manuawili Falls. Maunawili is a fun, and more challenging, hike. Be prepared to get muddy and wet. I did it once or twice with slippers, but mostly i wore those "wet/dry" neoprene style shoes. It's a little bit more of a hike to expect a 5-year-old to handle, so be prepared to do some carrying of your keiki along the way if you want to reach the falls."
Note: management of Waimea Falls Park is in flux as the Audubon Society recently decided to bail out. The park has changed hands multiple times in the past decade.
