Maui Gets a Better Pizza : Flatbread Arriveth in Paia

Flatbread%20Pizza.jpgGranted, you don't come all the way to Hawaii to expect to get great pizza. And for the most part, Hawaii trails in that category. You'll never find a pie from the island ranked up there with the greats of the Big Apple, Chicago or SF. In fact, there are precious few pizza places that cook with the natural fuels -- wood or coal -- that make pies taste so much better. Which is why Flatbread Company is a welcome addition to Paia. True, its a chain. But there are only seven of them on the Mainland so its hardly Pizza Hut. And the vibe clearly fits in with hang-loose North Shore of Maui.

The oven is wood-fired (the company Website describes it as primitive pizza). Ingredients are organic and meats are free-range and/or nitrite free. Some of my foodie fiend friends on Maui tell me this is hands down the best pizza on the Valley Isle (although I'm sure that Casanova, another wood-fired joint, can give them a run for their money). Best of all, it's in funky, fun Paia, a fab North Shore burb that's getting hipper by the second. This restaurant is extremely family friendly so def drag the rug rats along. This is a particularly good place to stop for dinner on the way back from Hana if you're famished.

I even had a cheeseless pizza because my son is having some diet

Great food and atomosphere. Waited too long. The female manager is a major hottie…made the wait easier. :-)
