Now this is definitely a way I'd want to relax on Maui. Get up around 2:30 am to get ready for a 36-mile ultramarathon race which starts at 4:30 am and ascends Haleakala, the dormant volcano that dominates East Maui. The ascent? A mere 10,000 feet from sea level. This race bills itself as not for novice. No kidding. Me, I'll be waiting at the top with a cold drink in hand watching the living dead cross the finish line after spending 6-10 hours (if you aren't up the hill in 9, you are probably totally toast, anyway) running essentially straight uphill.
