I admit, when I first heard the name of the company, which recently opened in the new Waikiki Beach Walk upscale retail and restaurant enclave, I figured this was just another mainland chai. Fortunately, I was mistaken. Malibu Shirts had the foreseight to purchase the rights to reprint a number of classic Hawaii logos from the 1950s and 1960s -- including logos for some companies no longer around - on shirts. Primo Beer (now defunct), Love's Bakery (still around but different logo) and the International Surfing Championship in Makaha (super, super defunct) are three that you can see on the site but there are others in the store. This is smart retailing. First, locals will love these shirts. They are a groovy reminder of days gone by. Youngsters will like them because -- well, these shirts beat faux Abercrombie togs, and because the designs are just plain cool.
