Hawaii Foods: Buy That Honey! Hawaii Bees Going Fast!

A nasty little bug, the Varroa mite, has decimated bee stocks on the U.S. Mainland. Due to its isolation, Hawaii had remained free of the mite and Hawaiian bee hives had continued to produce amazing honey treats. Now the mite has shown up on Oahu in multiple locations and the prospects of controlling the infestation appear slim, considering the high volume of commercial boat and air traffic between islands that provide ample opportunities for mite stowaways.

Anyone who has tasted Hawaii honey can understand how much of a pending tragedy the arrival of these mites is. My advice? Get thee some Hawaiian honey, pronto. Here are some handy links.

Volcano Honey
-- from the Big Island, like sweet butter, amazingly rich

Hula Girl Honey -- very nice, lighter, mellow flavor, link is to distributor

Big Island Bees -- True honey varietals, raised on native island plants, complete with suggested food pairings!
