Hikes for Tykes: Kohala Waterfall Tour on Big Island
Where: The Big Island || Grouped in: The Big Island Kids, The Big Island Nature || Tagged:
In the Kohala District of the Big Island, clouds of mist collide with volcanic mountain ranges. The resulting rains fill hundreds of mountain streams and create numerous waterfalls, most of which are not accessible to the public. This region is perhaps one of the most waterfall rich and, at the same time, least visited aside from a few well-worn, well-touristed paths. Hawaii Forest & Trail makes it pretty dang easy to check out some of these spectacular falls. And you'll be the only one on the trail because this high quality outfitting and guiding company obtains access to private lands and negotiates passage with wary local ranches.
On this particular tour, a relatively easy 1.5 mile loop trails winds past seven, count 'em, seven waterfalls! The last waterfall has a swimming hole that perfect for dips in the chilly liquid goodness and lollygagging under the gentle cascades. The tour runs twice daily with no more than 10 guests per trip. Adult passage (including pickup and return transportation) runs $114, children under 12 run $89. The company was recently awarded the 2006 Ecotour Operator of the Year prize by the Hawaii Ecotourism Association. Got a fave hike for kids? Or a favorite waterfall trail?
