Lydgate%20Park%20Shore%20Diving.jpgThis wonderful little beach park is often overlooked by tourists but that's their loss.Lydgate is a county park so there are bathroom facilities, showers, parking and lifeguards (one of the few beaches on Kauai that does). There are two wading / swimming areas that are ringed with large lava rocks and totally calm -- perfect for kids and novice snorkelers. Beyond the boulders the waters can be rougher but the snorkeling is very good on sunny days. The water is generally clear. The beach is sandy and long with lots of space. Shore diving off Lydgate is also quite good, according to Shorediving.com. Apparently, kitesurfers like Lydgate, as well. At the North end of the park is the Kamalani Playground, one of the coolest playgrounds in the state and a definitely distraction for kids.Even on a cloudy day, this is a great beach. There isn't much shade so best to avoid Lydgate in the middle of the day if you are sun sensitive. A strong tradewind or East swell can kick up the ocean quite a bit outside the protected pools.
