Hawaii Food News Roundup: Stage Review,

Here's the latest.

The Star-Bulletin gives the Alan Wong's alumni at Stage Restaurant three stars but its hardly a convincing review. At blog Tasty Island, reviews of locally made Portuguese sausages. Yum, Pomai. Grand Cafe Bakery in Chinatown (Honolulu) has reopened for dinner after a long hiatus. Hopefully, the service issues are ironed out. "Lost" cast members spotted chowing down at Cassis, Chef Mavro's new downtown joint. I've also been remiss in not including Mavro's own new spring menu, which is impressive. Honolulu Weekly does a positive review of Baci Bistro in Kailua (caveat readers: Hawaii restaurant reviewers' version of good Italian food is not quite what Mainlanders might equate with good, say, New York Italian food). Maui Time Weekly gives more positive ink to David Patterson's locally sourced cooking (as in, he catches his own fish) at the Hotel Hana-Maui's signature restaurant. They also like Casanova in Makawao, long one of my faves on Maui. Hawaii Island Journals sets a lure at Fish Hopper in Kailua Kona (which has one of the great restaurant locations in the islands). Hapahale tells us to eat Akamai Oatcakes -- oops, too late, done that, delish. Honolulu Advertiser reviews pasteles from Jackies. A food review site I had never seen before that seems kind saucy, Hilo Eats. Time for bed, folks.

I would like to take this time to write and let you know that my husband and I went to a fund raiser at the Stage Restaurant in Honolulu and were sad to know that the Stage Restuarant would serve Foie gras…
Our table of six were very sad and vowed never to eat there again. Is there a place we can go publicly to try and have them ban Foie gras in these so called high end establishments????

Why don’t you talk the other great reviews by Wanda Adams and John Heckathorn, or is this another example of selective journalism? Besides, if you read Nadine Kam’s article and don’t misinterpret, her bottom line is that she hopes more restaurants on Oahu start doing what Stage is doing, and that’s pushing the limit of food in Hawaii. Anyone who knows food and who is in the restaurant industry knows that the culinary scene in Hawaii is stagnant and dead.

Replying to RZA, I had not seen Wanda’s review — the Honolulu Advertiser makes it very difficult to find them. I also suspect it ran after this post. Regarding John Heckathorn’s review, I don’t have access to Honolulu Magazine online — they make you wait a month. As to the accusation of selective journalism, yes, its pretty selective — as in, I post what I have time to find because this blog is not exactly paying my bills. ;)
