Hawaiirama Foodie Roundup

Wailua_Bottle_Pour.jpgI'll start off the foodie roundup with a mention of Wailua Wheat, a lilikoi-citrus scented wheat bear put out by Kona Brewing Company. This is the company's second limited-release custom brew, following on the heels of its stellar chocolate and coffee-flavored Pipeline Porter. Wailua Wheat is light, brisk and perfect for Hawaii's tropical heat. I've tasted this brew in an earlier incarnation and it knocked my socks off. Look for it at a local liquor store, supermarket, or on tap at local bars. Here's the rest of the foodie news. The Weekly Eater loves Gaku Sushi, the second strong review in a month. Could this upstart from the former sushi chef at Tokkuri Tei upstage the Nobu opening on May 28?

Word is that Nobu Matsuhisu is in the house and is fine-tuning his latest restaurat, set to open at the Waikiki Parc Hotel. Hawaiian Airlines plans to air drop a true tasting menu complete with wine pairings into the laps of its first class customers. Maui superchef Bev Gannon (of Haile Maile Plantation fame) helms this offering. As my friends at Jaunted.com report, celebs are already dropping in on DUO, the new surf-and-turf Tom Colicchio clone at the Four Seaons Wailea. In this case, its Kate Bosworth on a reprise of "Blue Crush". The new Honolulu Design Center does dinner theater with its Nosh-n-Watch offerings, the third Sunday of each month. This place aspires to become a serious culinary destination with its Stage restaurant staffed by Alan Wong's alums.

Kona Brewing has great beers! I’ve not had their bottled porter yet, but their porter they sell in their pubs (not a chocolate/coffee style) is fantastic and has won awards at the Great American Brewfest. I’m not personally a fan of wheat beers, but friends have been raving about their lillikoi-wheat beers for years.
