Hawaii Hotels: More Resort Fees Breakdown from Travel-Hawaii

I've blogged on Travel-Hawaii.com before. It's an online/offline travel agency that really knows the islands and the various hotel properties and isn't afraid to tick off hotels by telling them that their product stinks (when warranted). Travel-Hawaii has started doing some killer data collection as well. They recently updated their resort fee breakdown. It's not comprehensive by any stretch but they added a number of new properties and what the resort fee offers. A quick primer. A "resort fee" is a mandatory charge levied on guest by the hotels that is not actually included in the quoted price of the room,

in most cases. To a certain degree, these fees are rip-offs. Why should hotels squeeze an extra $20 per room out of guest by saying they are giving away freebies they should be giving away any way rather than nickel-and-diming guests? But fortunately more resorts are actually offering real value for their resort fees. Of the bunch on the latest list, the Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort & Spa, on the Big Island, appears to have the best deal. Includes

Overnight and Self-Parking (value: $10 and $7 per day respectively but should be free)
Unlimited high speed Internet (value: $9.95/day but should be free)
Free Local and Inter-island Calls (nice!)
Daily half-day snorkel rental for two (value: $24/day -- excellent); Daily one-hour Tennis Court Time (value: $10/day -- also excellent)
Daily Mai Tai for Two (righteous, easily $20 per day in Mai Tais)
$10 Credit per Stay Towards in-room Movies (aw, shucks).

Yes, but what if you don’t want to use any of their services? I must admit, Waikoloa actually looks like they offer you something decent. But most hotels make you pay for things, like the gym, that you’ll never use!

That’s why I’m visiting Oahu, I stay in one of the many Oahu vacation rentals. There prices are all listed up front and no hidden resort fees.

It is important to note that not all resorts charge hidden fees. And many places that you think are resorts, like Kuhio Shores on Kauai, are actually condominium complexes within a resort, so they don’t have these fees either.
