Hawaii Travel Network Rip-Off Update: Bad to Worse

I've been getting a steady stream of comments from unlucky folks who got ripped off by Hawaii Travel Network, a reseller of travel packages and attraction tickets (luaus and whatnot) that suddenly went AWOL without paying its bills, leaving hundreds if not thousands of Hawaii visitors in a lurch. The situation does seem to be more serious than was first apparent. Some of the commenters have lost thousands of dollars to HTN. I have yet to hear what Hawaii law enforcement is doing about this. The case of HTN should be fair warning. The travel market is filled with shady online operators peddling to-good-to-be true prices and packages. Here's a few sure-fire ways to avoid this nasty gotcha.

First, you can now book just anything you want through the bigs, such as Expedia, Travelocity and Kayak, even down to luau tickets or scuba and snorkeling trips. Second, you can book directly with the Hawaii activities folks through the Activities and Attractions Association of Hawaii. The deals are comparable if not better. The Gold Card is a total deal. Booking here also helps the mom-and-pop operators because the activity middlemen generally take a pound-o-flesh cut of 40% to 50% of the gross booking. So the guy who owns your scuba boat can barely make a living, unless you pay them directly. Lastly, if you are about to book a hotel, call the hotel and check if the tour consolidator / onlin operator you are planning to buy from is in good standing. It may be hard to tell but in generall the hotels figure out pretty quickly when a scam is underway.

hi we have just arrived back from our honeymoon in hawaii but whilst there have been ripped off by HTN for 400 dollars for a shark encounter we booked a few months previous to our wedding as a once in a life time trip we also waited an hour and half to be picked later to find out from the uk off my parents that it was a scam myself and my husband feel very upset about the situation as we cant claim the money from our credit card as we just missed the 90 days limit the money was not really the issue it left a bad taste in our mouths for a few days on a tip of a life time thanks for listening stacey crouch

We had booked Luau tickets also with HTN and they called us the day before the luau and said that the vouchers were not being accepted from the luau, and they said they would refund the amount right away. After receiving my bank statement I realized that I had never received the credit, so I tried to call them and their phone is disconected. We were able to get new tickets thru our hotel, but never received the refund for the first tickets.

I too was ripped off by HTN after booking a surfing lesson and heli trip. I did get my money back from my credit card after the 90 day limit, so do try. I printed off info from this website and sent off all documentation that I had received from HTN. Luckily I have had enough time to rebook my trips.
