Haute Dog, Honolulu! A Five-Star Wiener Joint in Kakaako
Where: Oahu || Grouped in: Oahu Food || Tagged:
Legendary Chicagoland restaurateur Hank Adaniya, the owner of the celeb chef factory and noted Mobil Five-Star Joint Trio, has returned to his dog eat dog roots -- in Honolulu, no less. Before his birth, Hank's mom and dad ran a hot dog stand in Kapiolani Park. Adaniya cashed in his big restaurant chips and hightailed it back to Honolulu to open a not-so-humble hot dog stand in a sunblasted, quasi-industrial (but up and coming) nabe called Kakaako (no, its NOT walking distance to Waikiki). Natch, he named it Hank's Haute Dogs. What else would you call a humble hole-in-the-wall serving up wieners combos like seafood sausage, miso mayo and daikon relish or a duck and foie gras dog ground served with a
Sauterne, honey mustard and fruit confiture? Hot diggity.

I have never been here. However, my comment is that the prices seem ridiculously high, even considering that this is supposed to be the hot cuisine on the mainland. Certainly, Kaka’ako isn’t one of those areas with much decor (with the exception of John Dominis Restaurant, which is right on the Kewalo Basin shore), so the prices seems doubly high. About 0.5 miles away, Comp USA, there is a hotdog cart where the prices are only about half! Then, one could always go to Costco & get both a hotdog & drink for #1.50. No decor, but there doesn’t seem to be any here either.
