Hawaii Golf: Your Own Private Course -- By Invitation Only

resorts_hualalai17.jpgVeteran Hawaii golf writer Don Chapman rounds up a spate of recently opened (meaning within a decade or so) exclusive, private golf clubs around the Hawaiian Islands. Private, as in, by invitation only in some cases, such as the Nanea Golf Club on the Big Island (Hawai'i Island). In the Kapalua Resort, the Mauka Course will replace the public Village Course (yet another controversial instance of West Maui shutting out more locals). In many cases, these clubs are keeping an extremely low profile.

Among them is the newly refurbed King Kamehameha Club on Maui which features a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed club house that is truly awesome. The most accessible of the lot is the private Hualalai Course (pictured here -- nice hole, eh?) designed by Tom Fazio. It's open to guests of the Four Seasons Hualalai and residents of the resort complex next door. With a steady decline towards the ocean, this course may have some of the best ocean views in Hawaii.
