Kula%20Sandalwoods.pngMaui Time Weekly weighs in on the Kula Sandalwoods Cafe, a restaurant I have often heard mentioned as a local favorite with simple, hearty fare. It was really nice food when I went there. Plenty of local vehicles parked outside, always a good sign. Don't expect culinary fireworks but do expect big portions and good home-style cookin'. Pictured here is the local staple Portuguese sweet bread French Toast (not to be confused with sweetbreads -- no organs here, have no fear). Kula Sandalwoods is a great place to hang after, say, the Haleakala sunrise tomfoolery. And I love restaurants run by husband and wife teams (she cooks, he runs front of house at Kula Sandalwoods). They've got soul. Only breakfast and lunch, they close for dinner hours.
