Hawaii Adventures: Mountain Biking in Polipoli State Park on Maui
Where: Maui || Grouped in: Maui Nature || Tagged:
The Polipoli State Recreation Area was closed after a brushfire devastated the old growth, but alien, forests on the hills. Fortunately, the area should be opening again soon. And it is one of the best places to ride mountain bikes in the islands. I am not sure if the redwood forest there is intact but I pray it is. Here's a bit of older writing I did on the topic. On the western flanks of Halakeala Volcano, a redwood forest planted in the early 20th century rises over rolling red dirt hills and pasturelands in the Polipoli Springs State Recreation Area. This is some of the finest mountain biking in the islands, with relatively easy trails and huge views of the West Maui Mountains, Lanai, and, of course, the ocean and coastline of the Wailea District 6,000 feet below. The Redwood Trail runs 3.4 miles round trip. For more information on the status of the Kula Forest Reserve, call the Division of Forestry and Wildlife's Maui office at (808) 984-8100.
