It's a bit of a drive to a nice swimming beach but the weather in North Kohala is stellar -- its upcountry so magically cool with steady breezes. This is also waterfall country, so lots of neat hiking trails for those wanting to get wet. The nearby town of Hawi is a pint-sized bastion of country hip, with plenty of old Hawaii character left. Rooms at this place look quite nice and its on the new side so you get the benefit of less treadware. Definitely go to Bamboo to have a drink and dinner. And drop your Blackberry into the ocean, por favor. At $800 per night for the whole shebang, it's a total steal. A great place for families or groups of couples.
