Gourmet Magazine has named Pacific'o and I'o, two highly regarded Lahaina, Maui eateries helmed by popular award-winning Chef James McDonald, to its list of top restaurants with farm connections. There were only nine restaurants named so major congrats to the Maui maestro who uses the fresh goodies from his O'o (the word means "digging stick" in Hawaiian) Farm in Upcountry Maui to buff out the exquisitely fresh fish that he culls from the boats docking a stone's throw away in Lahaina Harbor. McDonald also offers tours of the farm for kids and adults that includes a seasonal ingredient lunch with stunning ocean views across the isthmus. The farm grows everything including Tahitian limes, tomatoes, stir-fry veggies, and all manner of fresh herbs. They also serve up Maui-grown range fed beef that's got a serious island flavor. I've been meaning to write about this tour for a while and glad I found an excuse. A word on I'o and Pacific'o. Best to go on the weekends when the culinary "A' team is present. It's still pretty good on other nights but can be hit or miss.
