Resort%20Quest%20Papakea.jpgI am reviving the long dormant "Ask Hawaiirama" feature on this blog. Send me questions. I'll tell you no lies. The latest comes from Cindi.

"Hi, Hawaiirama:

My husband and I will be on Maui the first week of March '08 and are considering the (Resort Quest) Papakea. Is this a nice place?

Thanks,
Cindi"

To be honest, Cindi, I haven't visited that property in a while and believe its been renovated since. Reviews on TripAdvisor seem to be trending positive, which is a always a good sign with second tier, generic, box-on-the-beach properties like the Papakea. One negative review complained of finding a dead roach in the apartment. LOL. Welcome to Hawaii, dude! Some caveats, here. Renovations at the hotel could make certain rooms truly awful. Rooms without nice ocean views will probably seem pretty cruddy, as the general quality of this accommodation (its a condotel folks) is somewhat questionable. There is no swimming beach fronting the hotel so you might have walk a bitKaanapali and park (uggh!). All told, this place might be worth the risk if you can't afford better. Maui is expensive. As for me, I don't think I would want to stay there and would opt from a property with a bit more panache.

You get beach there ONLY during high tide, and some of the units there are very marginal, it’s a condo and individually owned, resorquest is just the management company, the TA “trend” is probably paid for by RQ

I stayed at Papakea not even a year ago and it’s an excellent choice. The rooms differ as some are updated and others are not. The views are gorgeous and the grounds are the same. There is a beach you can walk on but as the tide comes up the beach will disappear during part of the afternoon. Anywho, I would definetly recommend this place. The price is cheap but the quality is just fine. No complains here. I would stay there again.

Oh gosh, we love Papakea! We used to own a unit there way back when and have stayed there ever since. Renting direct from owners is both a great value and a good way to know for sure what your room will be like. Some have been upgraded, some not. Ask for pictures and furnishing/amenities details and there will be no surprises. The grounds remain beautifully kept, proximity to the ocean is unequalled in newer high-rise condos with greater setback requirements — all-in-all a perfect place for low-key relaxation!
