The Last Ride Down: Haleakala Bike Rides Banned

Kill me once, kill me twice, kill me thrice -- shut it all down. Haleakala National Park on Maui announced it would suspend the popular and apparently dangerous downhill bike tours after a 65-year old woman lost control of her two-wheeler and veered in front of a tour van. The impact was fatal and the accident was the third death this year on the mythical mountain that is the highest point on Maui.
The road down has always been a spectacular serpentine trip. When I took the tour over a decade ago, it seemed pretty tame. We moved at around 10 miles per hour. The dopey bright yellow jumpsuits didn't help. But perhaps things have sped up since then or maybe a young kid on a bike is more immune to speed. Whatever the case, three deaths out of the 90,000, estimated downhill tour-goers that make the descent each year makes this attraction the most fatal in the islands by a whopping long shot. All seven tour operators will lose the right to run tours for at least 60 days. The ban could be expended, depending on findings.
