Inside the Academy: Artists on Staff, Rising Talent

It's not just a museum -- it's a veritable art league farm team! Did you know that some of O'ahu's best up-and-coming young artists are on staff at the Honolulu Academy of Arts? On Nov. 25, Alan Konishi, who oversees the ceramics studio at the Academy Art Center at Linekona, saw the opening of his show "All Tomorrow's Parties" at the HPU Gallery, on view through Jan. 18. His new multimedia works (that's his "OurSpace No. 1" pictured) and paintings examine MySpace culture, lurking and nostalgia, as well as imagine the bedrooms of people he knows. If you eat at the Academy's Pavilion Café, you're familiar with Otto, star of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch", 86 List band member and maker of Hawai'i's best cheesecake (you can eat them at The Contemporary Museum's café). He's also an artist and he has a piece — metal, paper and papier mache on canvas — in the show "Los Feo Faces" at Mercury Bar on Chaplain Lane.
