The Bay Club on Maui: Peter Merriman Will Revive It

One of my favorite Maui memories involved a supreme chocolate desert and a snifter of port at the old Bay Club in Kapalua, Maui. The restaurant is perhaps the most romantic setting in all of the islands, with an open-air aerie overlooking Kapalua Bay and views out to Molokai. Merriman will oversee the grand revival of this old gal. Merriman is a proven quantity and I am glad to see this lovely spot open up again -- it's been shuttered and decaying for a number of years now as Kapalua retools. I'm eager to see what he does with his menu there. His farm-to-table mantra will work better now on Maui, what with more options, than it did at his ill-fated Bamboo Bistro in the audibly challenged location near Maalaea which didn't last very long. Regardless, the setting alone is sufficient to fill the belly. Honeymooners, take note. Look for the opening June 2008.

Dear Peter and associates,
This information has thrilled me. In the early 80’s until 1991 I owned a condo at the Maui Eldorado. Going to the Bay Club was always my first priority when I arrived on Maui. Drinking the famous Maitai and looking out at Molokai was always the true meaning of being back home in paradise for me.
Sunday, June 8, 2008 my husband and I were eating at Billy’s at the Beach in Newport Beach when we received the shocking news that the Bay Club had closed. Sadly, we had not been to Maui for several years due to many unexpected family events so were unaware of the closing. I was in shock.
Tonight, hoping to obtain more detailed information re: The Bay Club, I decided to research it on the internet and was thrilled to read this new information.
My 37 year old daughter and her 39 year old husband will be travelling to Maui July 28, 2008 and will go to the Hana Maui to renew their wedding vows on July 30th. They have been married 13 years but this event is especially significant as my son-in-law survived a massive stroke on March 7, 2008. They had spent their honeymoon in the family condo at the Maui Eldorado in April of 1995 and spent one night at the Hana Maui. Having gone through what they have in the past three months, renewing their vows on Maui is especially significant. They will be staying in Kahana, a gift from friends, for the rest of their trip.
My son-in-law, Kurt Heeley, is a top salesman for Southern Wine and Spirits in San Francisco and whether or not he will be able to return to work is still uncertain. I have been trying to think of something very special I could do for them to commerate this special event. I think you have just solved this dilema for me.
If you could please confirm your re-opening date so I can attempt to arrange a dinner for them at the Bay Club I would be very appreciative. I know it would be very meaningful to Erin and Kurt as the Bay Club is one of the first places I took my children to eat on our first family trip to Maui and one of the places Erin and Kurt ate on their first Honeymoon.
Thank you for taking the time to read this very long and detailed email. I look forward to hearing from you.
Mahalo,

I have to think of the many true-blue employees of the Bay Club that had worked there for 15 plus years.
It it great news that Peter Merriman is reopening this most beautiful place to dine on Earth. I hope you are blessed with top shelf employees like the people I worked with to bring the Magnificent old Bay Club ambience back to life! That will be true Aloha…the breath of life.
