State Parks Roundup from Hawaii Mag

Kokee.jpegMy friend Derek Paiva over at the Hawaii Magazine blog runs through the 10 most popular state parks with a quick and dirty pros and cons list (most of which you won't get in the guide books). A few additions: Not only is the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel smack on top of a gorgeous beach that should have been left unsullied, it also is drabbly, vaguely ugly and has mediocre food (last time I checked). The beach is great, tho. A park that didn't make the list is Kokee, which is perhaps my all-time favorite state park. The hiking is phenomenal. The camping is...wet, The cabins are.....spartan as in SPARTAN. But the views are unreal and the Portuguese bean soup at the cafe (with corn bread) is like the hand of the savior himself cradling you gently.

The most unforgettable birding adventure of my life so far took place in Koke’e. Apart from that, this is, of course, the setting for Jack London’s touching story Ko’olau the Leper. The word awestruck is overused but that is what happens to one as a visitor to this absolutely incredible place.
