malasada.JPGI managed to stop at Leonard's in Kapahulu this weekend for a quick malasada fix and was greeted with a poster proclaiming Feb. 5 as Malasada Day (related to Mardi Gras, of course). We've blogged on these greasy goodie native to Hawaii before. Essentially, its a deep-fried ball of flour, eggs and butter.According to Derek Paiva (whose forefathers brought this healthy treat to Hawaii) it was originally spelled "malassada" and was a way to use up eggs and butter before Lent. Now it's a year-round treat but Feb 5 is the best day to buy'em up. Here are three of Oahu's best places for malasada madness.
