Inside the Academy: Prayer Flags Are Go!

In the run-up to the opening of The Dragon’s Gift: The Sacred Arts of Bhutan, an upcoming and highly anticipated exibition at the Honolulu Academy of Arts, staff—and visiting monk Sonam Tshering—put up a grove of Bhutanese prayer flags in front of the museum on Thursday. The gauzy fabric inscribed with prayers fluttering in the wind raises the spirit, makes everyone who walks by them feel giddy. Is that the secret to Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness? The flags fly from bamboo cut in Nu‘uanu, with the poles stuck into deep drilled holes. The museum is buzzing as the exhibition goes through final installation, and complementary shows go up in galleries throughout the complex. The Dragon’s Gift opens to the public on Feb. 26.
