Maui Haleakala Bike Tours: Barred Forever?

Where: Maui || Grouped in: Maui Nature || Tagged:

After a spate of serious accidents and casualties on downhill bike rides run by activity companies taking tourists down the steep and serpentine road from the Haleakala Summit, the National Park Service banned the popular rides last year. Now, after further study by the NPS, it appears the ban will likely go permanent. I actually think this is a good thing. Never liked the tours, the silly jump--suits and the herded cattle ambiance. If you're really gonna risk it up there, then go big -- rent your own bike and helmet, take the ride down at your own pace and don't sweat the details as much. HUGE caveat -- those rocks you see in that thar yonder pasture? They are made of lava and will slice you like a Mach 3 razor. So stay on the road, kids.

Dear Alex,

Its biased comments like yours that seem to rule the anti everything sites. On behalf of the approximately 1,500,000 plus riders who claimed this the highlight of their trip and had no problem riding down Haleakala I disagree. Why not ban hikers (5 killed in last two years) cars (6 people killed in Haleakala in last 12 months).

When we let the government decide instead of the people we end up with a bunch of uninformed prejudice comments such as yours. Telling people “if they really want to risk it up their go big” is pretty incondiderate. People should take their time and show respect and be careful.

Hey how about banning arrogant comments by biased individuals.
