Poison Gas Webcam Hawaii; Volcano Forces Evacuation of Idyllic Village
Where: Oahu || Grouped in: Oahu Nature || Tagged:
Kilauea Volcano has gone from tourist attraction to major hazard. While the shield volcano has been erupting for decades, that eruption recently changed form to create voluminous noxious sulfur gas, explosions and hot plumes of smoke. All this is happening in fairly close proximity to Volcano Village, the lovely little town located just outside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and a stone's throw from Kilauea Caldera. The State and Park Rangers ordered a full evacuation today due expected wind changes that could send lethal quantities of these poisonous gases floating towards the village. You can check out the volcano regularly at this Webcam.

Shouldn’t you mention that the image you posted is actually of lava entering the ocean, not of the recently opened vent in Halemaumau at Kilauea’s summit? People visiting the Webcam might wonder about the different looks. Also, to be clear, the new venting of gas and some ash is in addition to the lava production which continues down on the east rift, sending lava flows down to the coastline seven miles away.

Dave is correct in saying I should mention this. It’s all part of the same eruption and I, foolishly, erred on the side of posting what looked like a more spectacular image. Thanks, Dave. Duly noted.
