Customers will cough up $15 for the first piece of checked luggage on flights between the Mainland and Hawaii starting for travel after Oct. 1 purchased on or after Aug. 1. This matches other airlines doing the same thing nationally. First piece of luggage will be free on interisland flights, unlike competitor go!. Whew! Hawaiian is the dominant interisland carrier so its cool they didn't decide to pile on more baggage. This announcement comes shortly after a $25 second bag charge levied by the airline. Note to self -- pack lighter. Oh, almost forgot. Hawaiian also upped mileage requirements for redemption of frequent flier awards. The minimum number of miles for a roundtrip interisland ticket will rise from 10,000 to 15,000 miles, a whopping 50% hop. The minimum for trans-Pacific flights will increase from 35,000 to 40,000 miles.
